The 2,000-member Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) has partnered with Western Farm Press to host an accredited five module weed resistance management educational course online.

Entitled Status of Herbicide Resistance in Weeds, it was developed by the society’s herbicide resistance action committee and can be accessed at http://www.pentonag.com/wssa.wrm or at pentonag.com.

The course is accredited for two hours/units of continuing education credit in California, Arizona, Florida, and Texas, and for Certified Crop Advisors nationally. More states are regularly being added to the accreditation list.

WSSA approached Penton Media to host the five-segment course based on the success of Penton’s CEU portal, which now hosts 27 courses.

\There are now almost 9,000 licensed professionals and farmers registered on the portal, and to date, more than 50,000 courses have been completed for credit hours/units.

“The partnership between WSSA and Penton is significant for Penton’s online CEU program,” says Greg Frey, vice president for the Penton agricultural publishing group. “WSSA is a widely-recognized worldwide professional organization of weed scientists, and we value the affiliation with such a well-respected, professional society.”

\WSSA was established in 1956, with membership including academia, government and private industry.

“WSSA’s recognition of Penton’s online continuing education outreach elevates our program to a higher educational level,” says Frey. WSSA partnered with Penton for greater exposure of its weed resistance management educational modules to farmers and licensed consultants.

Penton has an eight-year record of successfully obtaining credit hour/units for online CEU courses from more than 20 state departments of agriculture for licensed agricultural professionals, a major consideration in the two-year affiliation contract between WSSA and Penton for adding the WSSA courses to the pentonag.com CEU portal.

Penton also successfully acquires credit for its courses from the American Society of Agronomy’s 15,000 Certified Crop Advisers nationally and in Canada.

The new course consists of five modules: Current Status of Herbicide Resistance in Weeds; How Herbicides Work; What is Herbicide Resistance?; Scouting After a Herbicide Application and Confirming Herbicide Resistance; and Principles of Managing Herbicide Resistance.

There are at least 25 comprehensive review questions at the conclusion of the course, and a score of 70 is required to earn credit. Western Farm Press reports hour completions to all accrediting agencies.
