FMC launches Talstar XTRA featuring Verge granule technology

Over the past two years, FMC Professional Solutions, a business unit of FMC Corporation, has been enhancing its granular product line. First, FMC added zeta-cypermethrin to its industry-leading bifenthrin granular product, creating Talstar ® XTRA for enhanced speed and broad-spectrum protection. Then, FMC introduced Verge™ granule technology on its Talstar EZ product. Now, all of the "XTRAs" come standard in one granular product-and at no additional cost-with the introduction of Talstar XTRA granular insecticide featuring Verge Granule Technology.

The new product combines the fast and long-term power of Talstar XTRA with the Verge granule's many performance benefits, including a more uniform product distribution and less dust. It will be available for purchase beginning August 2012.

A unique, clay-based granule developed exclusively for FMC, Verge breaks down quickly to release the active ingredient and disappear into the landscape. Virtually dust- and odor-free, the new formulation is better for the applicator since it reduces exposure during application. Verge granule technology was developed by Oil-Dri Corporation, an industry leader in micro-particles and mineral processing.

Combining the proven molecule in Talstar with the fast-acting zeta-cypermethrin, Talstar XTRA acts very fast (as quickly as 15 minutes on fire ants!) but it doesn't sacrifice the residual-at least three months-that turf professionals expect from Talstar. It is labeled for a broad spectrum of surface-feeding pests, including fire ants, Caribbean crazy ants, billbugs, chinch bugs, earwigs, scorpions, fleas, and ticks. Its low application rates make it a cost-effective solution for both broadcast and perimeter pest control on turf. Plus, Talstar XTRA is not "restricted use."

"The best just got better," said Adam Manwarren, product manager for FMC Professional Solutions. "Not only will you keep your clothes and equipment cleaner, Verge granules rapidly disintegrate into thousands of micro-particles in less than a minute after being watered-in."

From a performance standpoint, turf professionals will see improved results because Talstar XTRA featuring Verge provides a more uniform spread, based on the ballistics of the granule structure. This means fewer callbacks for retreatment, leading to a better bottom line. In addition, the product is non-staining, another major benefit to the applicator.

"By switching from the previous granular carrier to the new Verge granule, FMC improved the way in which the active ingredient is delivered across a given treatment area," said Bruce Ryser, technical representative with FMC. "This new carrier change is beautifully spherical. Its consistent shape offers the tightest particle distribution of any current carrier."

Talstar XTRA featuring Verge is labeled for use on turf around residential, institutional, public, commercial and industrial buildings, parks, recreation areas and athletic fields. It can be used for perimeter, broadcast or mound treatments.

Available for use by turf management professionals, Talstar XTRA featuring Verge will continue to be sold in a 25-lb. resealable bag. The use-rate varies by pest, but the most common use-rate is 2.3 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft., so a 25-lb. bag will treat approximately a quarter of an acre.
