Two meteorologists who contribute to Penn State's long-running "Weather World" show have been nominated for an Emmy by the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Jon Nese and Marisa Ferger of the Penn State Meteorology department received the nomination for their weekly educational series "WeatherWhys," which highlights timely topics in meteorology and related environmental and astronomical sciences. Their Emmy-nominated submission included three features: "Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of Chernobyl," which revisited the nuclear disaster in which meteorology provided the initial evidence of a radioactive leak; "Lightning and College Football," which explored the intersection of thunderstorm season with college football season; and "The Story of Leap Year," which examined the quirky astronomical origins of adding an extra day to the calendar every four years.

Weather World can be seen each weekday evening in central Pennsylvania on WPSU-TV and statewide on the Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN).

The Mid-Atlantic Emmy winners will be announced at a gala at the Philadelphia Hilton on Sept. 22.
