Only a small amount of the U.S. HRS harvest remains to be done and much of that should be finished by the end of the week. Analysis of crop quality samples continues to show very little change from week to week. The latest report indicates that 93 percent of the samples have been analyzed with average protein remaining at 14.6 percent and average test weight at 60.9 pounds per bushel (80.1 kg/hl). Thousand kernel weight dropped slightly from 29.4 to 29.1 grams and total defects increased slightly to 1.3 percent with most of those being shrunken and broken kernels. The crop grades a No. 1 Northern Spring with vitreous kernel content of 74 percent.

The durum crop is 95 percent harvested in North Dakota and 93 percent harvested in Montana. About three-fourths of the expected crop quality samples have been analyzed with average protein of 14.7 percent. Both thousand kernel weight and test weight increased this week with the averages being 35.6 grams and 60.3 pounds per bushel (78.5 kg/hl) respectively. Total defects are higher this week at 1.7 percent (1.4 percent shrunken and broken, 0.3 percent damage and 0.1 percent foreign material). The crop grades a No. 1 Hard Amber Durum with average vitreous content of 82 percent.

The final crop progress report will be issued in October when finalized crop quality data is available.
