Tracy Kahn, principal museum scientist in the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences at the University of California, Riverside, lecturer in the Department of Biology, and curator of the university’s Citrus Variety Collection, has received the 2012 Award of Excellence from the California Citrus Research Board “for exceptional service to the California citrus industry.” The award was made August 22, 2012, at the board’s offices in Visalia.

Dr. Kahn devotes many hours maintaining the Citrus Variety Collection, evaluating and describing fruit quality, harvesting fruit, and creating attractive displays at numerous events including the Citrus Expo and the International Farm Equipment Show,” said MaryLou Polek, chief science editor of The Citrograph, the Citrus Research Board’s flagship publication.

In addition to her work with the Citrus Variety Collection, one of the world’s most diverse living collections of citrus and citrus relatives, Kahn is co-principal investigator (with Mikeal Roose) on a project to evaluate the commercial potential of new citrus cultivars, as part of an integrated program to develop and evaluate new commercial citrus scion and rootstock cultivars suitable for California conditions.

Kahn received her bachelor’s degree in botany from the University of Michigan in 1981 and her Ph.D. in botany from UC Riverside in 1987. She also graduated from the California Agricultural Leadership Program in 2005. In 2000, she received the “Staff Who Make a Difference” Award from the UCR Staff Assembly.
