Stall Achieves First 100+ Bushel in Michigan Soybean Yield
By CnAgri2012-11-01 19:10:57 PrintPrevious two-time winner Don Stall of Charlotte, Mich., has achieved the first 100+ bushel yield in the seven year history of the Michigan Soybean Yield Contest. Don entered the irrigated Group 2 category and achieved a 100.3 bushel yield in 2012. Sheryl Smith of the Greenstone Farm Credit Service office in Charlotte was the supervisor for Don's yield.
Stall is a previous winner of both the Michigan soybean yield contest and the state yield winner for Michigan in the National Corn Grower Association corn yield contest. Don attributes his success to hard work, attention to detail, and daily scouting. He also is willing to try new agronomic techniques, such as turbo till, as well as foliar applications of fungicides and fertilizers, and he irrigates.
Stall previously won the same category in the soybean yield contest in 2007 and 2011 and won the irrigated category of the corn yield contest in 2010 and 2011. He achieved a 299 bushel corn yield.
His 100.38 bushel per acre soybean yield was in the same field that yielded the state winning 2011 National Corn Grower Association irrigated corn yield of 299.7 bushels per acre.
For 2012 Stall said that the soybeans averaged 55 inches tall, with an average of 72 pods per plant. He said the draper combine platform was so full of soybean plant material that he could not see the belt at times.
2012 is the 7th year for the soybean yield contest sponsored by the Michigan Soybean Checkoff program. There are five categories, Category I, Category II non-irrigated, Category II irrigated, Category III non-irrigated, and Category III irrigated, in the contest with the average yield of the five winners increasing every year of the contest, exceeding 70 bushels per acre in 2011.
