Autumn harvesting and sowing of winter crops in progress

According to the latest information released by the Ministry of Agriculture,China had reaped 1.06 billion mu (70.667 million hectares) of farmland by Oct 29, accounting for 90.4% of its total grain growing area, up by 0.8% than last year.

In terms of crops, China has finished harvesting corn and soybean in general. The harvesting of middle-season rice (single-crop rice) is drawing to a close while that for late rice (double-crop rice) has amounted to 45.27 million mu (3.018 million hectares), 48% of its total growing acreage, up by 3.6% than last year.

The progress of harvesting varies by region. Generally, harvesting has finished in Northeast, Northwest and Southwest China. In Huang-Huai-Hai plain, China has harvested 91.1% of its grain-growing area, higher by 1.4% than the same time of last year. In the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and South China, China has harvested 64.6% of its grain-growing area, higher by 2.4% than the same time of last year .

As of Oct.29, 2012, the sowed acreage for autumn-winter crops has amounted to 503 million mu (33.53million hectares), representing 70.7% of the intended sowing acreage, higher by 0.7% than last year. 

China has sown 281 million mu (18.73 million hectares)winter wheat-growing farmland, accounting for 82.7% of its intended growing area, which is higher by 1.9% than last year. Meanwhile it also has sown 80.41million mu (5.36 million hectares) of farmland to oil-seed rape, accounting for 76.9% of the intended growing area, which is 0.3% higher than last year.
