As of Sept. 1, the 2012 Arizona Upland cotton yield forecast is for a record high 1,576 pounds per acre, 28 pounds more than last year’s all-time high, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Arizona’s Upland cotton harvested acreage is estimated at 198,000 acres, a 50,000 acre decrease from last year. Production is forecast at 650,000 bales, down 19 percent from last year.
Cotton bolls were open on 75 percent of the Arizona acreage as of Sept. 2; 10 percent ahead of the five-year average. Cotton condition is mostly good to excellent.
Arizona’s American-Pima cotton production is expected to total 7,000 bales from 3,000 acres. If realized, production will be down 13,000 bales and 7,000 acres from a year ago.
In the U.S., all cotton production is forecast at 17.1 million 480-pound bales, down 3 percent from last month but up 10 percent from last year. Yield is expected to average 786 pounds per harvested acre, down 4 pounds from last year.
U.S. Upland cotton production is forecast at 16.5 million 480-pound bales, up 12 percent from 2011.
U.S. Pima cotton production, forecast at 657,000 bales, is down 23 percent from last year.
