The shipping season is coming to an end on the Upper Mississippi River. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will officially close the navigation season on the Upper Mississippi on Monday.

According to the Associated Press, traditionally the last tow heading south of Lock and Dam 2 near Hastings has marked the end of the navigation season. The tow boat Show Me State went through the lock Wednesday.

The first tow of the 2012 season was the Deanna Ann out of Kentucky. It opened the season March 17.

This season is closing a bit earlier than last year, when the season ended Dec. 5.

While the Mississippi River isn't frozen over yet, the Corps will begin winter renovation and maintenance on Local and Dam 6 near Trempealeau.
