Chapter One China’s Wheat Production

According to BOABC’s investigation, over 40% Chinese residents take wheat as their main grain rations, and in wheat producing regions in north of Qinling Mountains-Huaihe River, wheat accounts for over 80% of residents’ rations consumption, and even more than 90% in rural areas. Grain farmers mostly are middle-aged and elderly people aged 45-65 without ability of working in the city.
Social security system for the aged in rural areas hasn’t been established now, farmers still live on land. Highly fragmented agricultural land restricts the scale and industrialization of agricultural production and becomes the largest barrier to Chinese economic restructure. Whether in terms of residents’ consumption or producer, wheat industry has important social significance.

1 Position of Wheat in China’s Food Crops

1.1 Position of Wheat in China’s Grains

Under the support of national policy, China’s sown area of wheat increased for a period after 2004; the sown area and output of wheat basically remained stable after 2009, and in 2013 China’s wheat output was 119 million tons, declined slightly compared with last year.
In 2014, weather condition is good in main wheat producing areas, China’s wheat output realized historical breakthrough, it’s predicted that national wheat yield will pass the record high level of 123 million tons in 1997 and reach 125 million tons.
