Introduction of China’s Major Vegetable Planting Area

China’s major vegetable planting area comprises six prominent regions: South China and Southwest hot region winter and spring vegetable planting advantageous area, Yangtze River Area winter and spring vegetable planting advantageous area, the loess plateau summer and autumn vegetable planting advantageous area, Yunnan-Kweichow plateau summer and autumn vegetable planting advantageous area, Huang-Huai-Hai and Bohai Area facility vegetable planting advantageous area, North China summer and autumn vegetable planting advantageous area. Diversification of the climate and geography in different planting areas guarantees the equilibrium of nationwide annual vegetable supply. Due to the geographical distance of some areas, division of the planting area in this report bases on administrative regions in accordance with the advantageous planting areas in “National Vegetable Industry Development Plan 2011-2020.”

Due to the differences in climate and geography, planting areas in those regions also differ greatly. The Yangtze River Area boasts of the largest vegetable planting area in China, as the largest planting base of winter and spring cool-season vegetable. Huang-Huai-Hai and Bohai Area occupies the second place, while northeast China has the smallest vegetable planting area.

Huang-Huai-Hai and Bohai Area produces the most vegetable products. This area is the major facility vegetable planting area of China, and the annual output in the year 2011 is amounting to 39.4% of the national total vegetable output. The planting area of the Yangtze River Area is 1.4 times as large as that of Huang-Huai-Hai and Bohai Area, but its output is only 81% of the latter. Southwest China stands last in terms of vegetable output and accounts for 3.8% of the national total output.

There is a remarkable rise in the vegetable planting area compared with that of 2004. The planting area in Southwest China increased from 903,200 hectares in 2004 to 1,401,300 hectares in 2011, increasing by 498,100 hectares at the increase rate of 60%; the planting area in Northeast China increases by 9.8%; Huang-Huai-Hai and Bohai area maintains stabilization with a slight decrease of 0.8%; in Northwest China the increase rate is 50.6%; South China, 6.5%; and Yangtze River Area, 13%.
