Estimates of World Grain Production in 2012

    Wheat, corn and rice prices were about $359/MT, $356/MT and $640/MT respectively in the international market in October, up 15.7%, 12.16% and 5.91% respectively, adjusted for inflation.

    World grain acreage and production are estimated to be 846 million hectares and 2.692 billion MT in 2012, up 1.3% but down 0.8% respectively on the year-on-year basis.

    Wheat acreage and production are estimated to be 230 million hectares and 668 million MT, down 1.51% and 4.46% respectively on the year-on-year basis. Corn acreage and production are estimated to be 179 million hectares and 885 million MT, up 4.02% but down 1.71% respectively on the year-on-year basis.

    World grain inventory and safety index are predicted to drop to 806 million MT and 33.1% respectively at the end of 2012/2013. Specifically, wheat, corn and paddy inventory is estimated to be 228 million MT, 257 million MT and 172 million MT respectively, suggesting a safety index of 33.4%, 28.7% and 33.7% respectively.
