China Grain Imports & Exports in Nov. 2013

Large amounts of wheat and corn imports have great influences on domestic market. Meanwhile, high domestic price continues restraining grain exports and promotes grain imports.
  
According to the Customs, China’s grain imports hit a monthly new high of 2.17 million MT in Nov., a significant increase of 149.43% on the year-on-year basis. Imports of other grains were 122,000MT, mainly kaoliang, increasing 870% YOY. Domestic kaoliang production tumbled and domestic low price and consumption for liquor and feed also promoted kaoliang imports.
As for raw grains, exports of wheat, rice, corn and barley totaled 53,360MT, up 3.09%YOY and 25.59%MOM. Exports of the four grains were 0MT, 50,704MT, 2,527MT and 129MT respectively. 
  
Of the total imports of 2.044 million MT, 967,100 MT were wheat, 180,500 MT rice, 797,900 MT corn and 97,100 MT barley, up 138.62%, up 721.1%, up 23.45%, up 107.66% but down 53.32% respectively on the year-on-year basis. Wheat was mainly import by state-owned enterprises and corn was imported by private enterprises due to low import costs.
  
Grain imports totaled 11.737 million MT in Jan. ~ Nov., a slip of 11.26% on the year-on-year basis. Of the total, wheat, rice, corn and barley recorded 5.118 million MT, 2.036 million MT, 2.443 million MT and 2.139 million MT respectively, down -38.96%, 4.37%, 50.55% and 13.50% respectively on the year-on-year basis.
  
Wheat import quota of none-state trade has been used up. Geminate wheat influenced domestic supply of high quality wheat. Imports by China Grain Reserves and COFCO entered state reserves instead of market, so the imports have no influence of market price.
  
In Dec., about 600,000MT GM corn was rejected. Most GM corn was imported by private enterprises, who have no full recognition of GMs.
  
As for grain manufactured products, exports of flour, corn starch and modified starch totaled 41,916MT, down 11.38% YOY and exports were 64,486MT. Specifically, exports of flour, starch and modified starch were 25,609MT, 7,435MT and 9,872MT respectively, down 5.69%, 25.38% and 12.17% respectively YOY.
  
Exports totaled 443,000MT in Jan.-Nov., down 2.92% YOY. Specifically, it was 253,000MT, 89,000MT and 10,1000MT, down 1.90%, 9.06% and up 0.41% YOY respectively.
  
Grain manufactured products imports totaled 35,772MT in Nov., down 11.2% YOY and up 23.49% YOY, equal to 55,033MT raw grains. Specifically, imports of modified starch, flour and starch were 31,481MT, 4,050MT and 241MT respectively. 
  
On the whole, grain exports were 118,000MT in Nov. and 1.213 million MT in Jan.-Nov., up 37.31% and 19.86% respectively YOY. Grain imports were 2.099 million MT in Nov. and 12.213 million MT in Jan.-Nov., up 128.5% but down 10.40% respectively YOY.

In Oct., kaoliang imports registered 262,800MT, new high, 179,000MT was from America; in Nov., kaoliang imports for food registered 103,200MT, 61,000MT from America and 42,000MT from Australia.
