Fertilizer is the most important material inputs for crop planting, and also the most import cost inputs expenditures for large-scale growers. Brazil is the world’s biggest agricultural producer and also an important fertilizer importer. In recent years, Brazil has become the biggest original country of China’s soybean imports. 2017 China’s soybean imports from Brazil stood at 50.93 million MT. Thanks to more opportunities to Brazilian agricultural producers brought by China-U.S. trade war, Brazilian growers are looking forward to having a deeper cooperation with China’s fertilizer industry.

Brazil is the world’s fifth biggest N-fertilizer consumer and the fourth biggest NPK consumer, but due to limited natural gas resources, the prices are high; influenced by transportation, P-fertilizer production costs are high, so N-fertilizer and P-fertilizer mainly depend on importing, and Brazil is the world’s third biggest urea importer and the eighth biggest ammonia importer. According to data, 2016 Brazilian urea consumption recorded 5.5 million MT, and 2016 imports were 4.6 million MT, taking up 83.6% in the total, and Middle Eastern countries such as Qatar, as well as Russia, Ukraine, etc., are main original countries of Brazilian urea imports; 2015 Brazilian MAP imports reached 2.28 million MT and DAP imports stood at 0.402 million MT; 2012 Brazilian potash imports reached 7.4 million MT.

China is a big fertilizer producer in the world. 2017 China’s chemical and mineral fertilizer exports stood at 24.16 million MT with export value of 6.05 billion US dollars, of which fertilizer exports to Brazil stood at 1.052 million MT (MAP exports:1.007 million MT and 300 million US dollars). ChemChina’s acquisition of Syngenta SinoChemical-Chemical’s merge make China become the world’s most important agricultural material (seeds, fertilizer, pesticides, etc.) producer and supplier. Syngenta has had years of strong operations in the fields of seeds and plant protection in Brazil, which provides good opportunities for a deeper relationship between Chinese fertilizer industry and Brazilian growers.
