2.1 Review on Fertilizer Market in 2012

2.1.1 Analysis on Prosperity of Fertilizer Industry in 2012

In 2012, the 2166 fertilizer producers in China realized sales revenue of RMB836.2 billion Yuan, up 17.2% year on year. The net profit reached RMB44.6 billion Yuan, up11.6% year on year. From the five-month behavior of average net profit margin of fertilizer industry from 2008 to 2012, it’s noted that the quarterly fluctuation characteristics got stronger in 2012. In the first 2 quarters of 2012, the net profit margin rebounded rapidly, reaching the top of the year (7.77%) in August, while in the 3rd and 4th quarter it dropped in fluctuation. Net profit margin was fluctuating within 4.0%-6.0% across the year.
 
In 2012, the average net profit margin of fertilizer industry was 5.3%, down 0.3 points compared with that of 2011; the industry loss percentage increased from 12.6% in 2011 to 13.4%; total loss of the enterprises reached RMB 5.6 billion Yuan, up 47.1% year on year.




2.1.2 Analysis on Fertilizer Market Trend in 2012

In 2012, fertilizer demand and supply was generally balanced in China, but the discrepancy between different sub-industries was enlarged; supply-demand of nitrogen fertilizer was getting balanced from the previous tight condition; supply-demand of phosphate fertilizer and potassium fertilizer was balanced. By comprehensive analysis, total fertilizer output reached 68.4 million tons in China in 2012, and imported fertilizer quantity was about 4.75 million tons, both numbers increased; while total domestic consumption was about 62 million tons and exported quantity was about 8 million tons, both numbers dropped slightly. The change of supply-demand led to the stock inventory exceeding 15.5 million tons by the end of 2012, up 25% year on year. Consumption rate of stock inventory rebounded from 19.8% in 2011 to 25.1%, which the highest level in the past 3 years.
 
Fertilizer production cost continued to increase in 2012. With reference to raw material cost, no obvious increase was noted regarding coal, natural gas, sulfur and potassium chloride. With reference to fuel cost, price of fuel oil increased by RMB200-300Yuan/MT. Besides, due to insufficient raw material and fuel supply, the price increase was mainly about numbers (especially raw material of natural gas), which led to low operation rate at factories and increased fertilizer production cost by certain degree. What’s more, labor cost and environment protection cost also increased influenced by the Labor Low and related environment protection laws.
 
Influenced by both supply-demand balance and cost increase, obvious fluctuation was noted regarding fertilizer price tendency in 2012. For price increase, the growth rate was mostly below 5%; but many fertilizer varieties also experienced price decline.
