In July 2019, the average wholesale price of eggs in China’s 36 large and medium-sized cities was 8.34 RMB/Kg, up by 16.83% month on month, increasing 23.01% year on year; the average wholesale price of eggs in China’s 36 large and medium-sized cities was 9.30 RMB/Kg, up by 9.73% month on month, increasing 13.51% year on year; Egg prices have skyrocketed this month. What drives up the price of eggs?

There are many reasons for the sharp rise in egg prices. Egg production has gone into the off-season, and the output of eggs in summer generally drops by about 5%, resulting in a certain reduction in the supply of eggs; the outbreaks of African swine fever resulted in reduced pork supply and increased egg consumption; the Mid-Autumn Festival is coming, food factories may store a large number of eggs in advance. All these factors will drive up egg prices, but they will never cause a skyrocketing.

Another important reason is that some egg traders may buy large quantities of eggs and then store them in cold storage. However, it is still difficult to track on the market.
