Estimates of Grain Production in 2012 in China

BOABC estimates that planted grain acreage and grain production may be 111.464 million hectares and 571.59 million MT this year, 0.81 % and 0.07% more than last year respectively.

The nation’s winter wheat production may be affected by the production decline in southern wheat-producing regions. Corn crop condition is affected by drought in Shandong. Soybean acreage is reduced in the Northeast to make room for grains.

Wheat acreage and yield are estimated to be 24.403 million hectares and 4,772kg/hectare this year, up 1.28% but down 2.56% respectively on the year-on-year basis. Wheat production is estimated to be 116.44 million MT, only next to the record high level, suggesting abundant supply this year.

Harvested winter wheat acreage, wheat production and yield are 22.695 million hectares, 109.83 million MT and 4.840kg/hectare this year, up 1.28%, down 1.73% and down 2.21% respectively on the year-on-year basis.

Spring wheat acreage is 1.708 million hectares, 1.39% more than last year. Assuming normal weather, spring wheat production may reach 3.868 million MT.

Corn acreage and production are predicted to be 34.917 million hectares and 199.10 million MT respectively this year. Spring corn acreage and production are estimated to be 23.348 million hectares and 133.8 million MT. Summer-planted corn acreage and production are predicted to be 11.569million hectares and 65.26 million MT.

Paddy acreage, yield and production are predicted to be 30.404 million hectares, 6,668kg/hectare and 202.73 million MT this year, up 0.62%, 0.63% and 1.26% respectively on the year-on-year basis.

Early indica acreage is about 5.837 million hectares, 1.68% more than last year. Early indica production is estimated to be 33.000 million MT respectively.

Single-cropping paddy acreage shrank in southern provinces because of drought but expanded in the Northeast. Single-cropping paddy acreage and production are estimated to be 18.091 million hectares and 131.80 million MT this year, up 0.10% and 1.29% respectively over last year. Late paddy acreage and production are predicted to be 6.476 million hectares and 37.948 million MT this year.

Planted japonica acreage is figured to be 9.809 million hectares, 5.81% more than last year. Planted indica acreage is figured to be 20.594 million hectares.

Barley acreage is predicted to be 723,000 hectares this year, an expansion of 16.3% over last year. Barley production is predicted to be 2.451million MT this year.
