China Government Issued Policy to Reduce Livestock Pollution

The State Council has recently issued a draft of Livestock Pollution Prevention & Treatment Regulations to seek public comment.

The regulations stipulate that governments of the county level and above can specify places of livestock production, the categories of livestock, the scale of production, etc. With regard to heavily polluted areas of livestock production, the government should take measures to treat pollution, transfer livestock farms or close them down. BOABC surmises that the policy may affect meat supply in the future, since small farms have to quit livestock production and large farms have to spend more on pollution control.

The regulations also contain some supportive measures: Livestock farms and livestock production zones can apply for low-interest loans to treat pollution and enjoy a preferential power rate for corresponding construction.
