Beer Production & Barley Consumption in August

Beer production by medium and large mills registered 5.8 million kiloliters in August, 1.9% more than the month before and 3.07% more than the same period of last year. Beer production totaled 35.252 million kiloliters in January ~ August, an increase of 1.26% on the year-on-year basis. The promulgated figures showed a beer production increase rate of 6.3% in August and 4.5% in January ~ August, both on the year-on-year basis.

The beer industry consumed about 1.088 million MT grains in August, including 391,000 MT barley. The industry’s grain consumption totaled about 6.194 million MT in January ~ August, including 2.135 million MT barley.

Barley consumption for various uses totaled 487,000 MT in August. Barley inventory was about 2.78 million MT at the end of August, suggesting a monthly consumption index of 5.71.

Barley acreage and production are estimated to be 723,000 hectares and 2.473 million MT respectively this year. Barley demand, imports, year-end inventory and year-end safety index are predicted to be 3.86 million MT, 1.713 million MT, 1.391 million MT and 36.14% respectively this year.

Barley price was RMB1,986/MT in August. Barley price is predicted to be RMB2,211/MT in 2012 on average, up 5% over last year.
