Growth of Scaled Cow Farms Promoting Alfalfa import

    China imported 103,074 dairy cattle during the first eleven months of 2012, up 25.98% year on year; the monthly average import price was 2,932 US dollars/head, up 12.67% year on year, of which November saw 9,117 dairy cattle import at the average price of 2,950 US dollars/head; the import was from Australia (3,000) and New Zealand (6,117).




Alfalfa Import

    According to data from the customs office, China imported 422,328 tons alfalfa during the first eleven months of 2012, up 67.62% year on year; the monthly average import price was 398.09 US dollars/ton, up 18.31% year on year; of which import in November was 40,444 tons at the price of 377.78 US dollars/ton; the origin was mainly the US. There has been rapid growth of scaled dairy farms and there has been insufficient quality fodder supply, which directly spurred the fast growth of alfalfa import during the period.
