China Grain Production & Consumption in Dec. 2013

Since pork price slumped, its consumption increased, which dragged down grain consumption for food. In 2013, grain consumption saw nominal increase and the growth rate exceeded that of supply. The consumption coefficient increased., good for stability of domestic price level.
Grain consumption for food use was 28.404 million MT in Dec., including 10.232 million MT consumed by rural households, 8.129 million MT by urban households and 10.043 million MT by the catering industry, down 9.14%, down 11%, down 6.86% and down 9.05% respectively on the year-on-year basis. Grain consumption for food use totaled 296.6 million MT in Jan. ~ Dec., a growth of 3.30% on the year-on-year basis.
Based on meat production, live hog inventory and classified feed consumption by scaled enterprises, feed consumption is forecast at 23.28 million MT in Dec., up 1.8% YOY; excluding consumption of imported soybean and other oil meal, actual grain consumption for feed is 17.31 million MT, up 4.61% YOY. Feed consumption totaled 245.5 million MT in Jan-Dec., up 2.11% YOY, among which, grain feed registered 181 million MT, up 2.09% YOY.
Calculated by 65% concentration of white spirit, alcohol production registered 871.7 million liters. Calculated by the direct fermentation ratio of 60%, production of alcohol produced by grain registered 1.4991 billion liters. Since producing 1 MT alcohol needs 3.2 MT grain, grain consumption for alcohol was 3.8378 million MT, up 16.09% YOY and 12.62% MOM; grain consumption for beer registered 0.547 million MT. Grain consumption for liquor registered 4.3848 million MT in December, up 14.7% YOY and up 11.1% MOM and totaled 45.5962 million MT in Jan.-Dec., up 6.83% YOY.
Starch production was 1.8 million MT in Dec. 2013, consuming 2.7 million MT grains. According to statistics of some departments, starch production totaled 22.53 million MT in 2012 and is expected to be 23.57 million MT in 2013, consuming 33.622 million grains and 35.2 million MT grains respectively.
In comprehensive, grain consumption for industrial use registered 7.07 million MT in Dec/, up 11.54% YOY and up 7.07% MOM, and 80.78 million MT in Jan-Dec., up 5.87% YOY. As import of MIR612 GM corn is not approved, deep processing will turn to consume domestic corns later and the products prices will rise.
In overall, grain consumption totaled 54.737 million MT in Dec., grain stocks by month-end was 515 million MT and monthly consumption coefficient was 9.41.
Fall grain harvest quantity registered 52.6 million MT in Nov.. In 2013, grain production accumulated to 580 million MT, including rice 206.5 million MT, corn, 204 million MT, wheat, 89.512 million MT, barley, 1.445 million MT and other grains, 54.14 million MT.
