China’s DAP exports in 2016 and 2017 stood at 6.8 million MT and 6.4 million MT respectively, with a two-consecutive-year decline; but DAP exports during January-July 2018 reached 3.33 million MT, up 7.6% year on year. The main reasons are as follows:

First, India is the main importer. Due to an increase in ammonium phosphate import costs and a drop in DAP output, direct imports of DAP ascended. Ammonium phosphate CIF for India in the first three quarters of 2018 stood at 678 US dollars, 730 US dollars and 758 US dollars respectively. Along with the increasing of phosphoric acid prices, Indian DAP output (product) in the first quarter of 2018 stood at 0.96 million MT, down 17% year on year; DAP output during April-July reached 1.1 million MT, down 34% year on year. So, DAP imports during April-July reached 2.8 million MT, up 60% year on year.

Second, the supply of some DAP exporting countries reduced. Due to the problems of equipment such as liquid ammonia equipment in Saudi Arabia, DAP production was suspended temporarily and the exact date of resuming production has not been set.

China’s DAP exports are gradually increasing, and would reach 7 million MT this year.
