Paddy processing status of enterprises above designated size

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, rice output of enterprises above designated size reached 10.11 million tons in October, up 1.09% year-on-year, and the cumulative production in the first ten months totaled 87.58 million tons, a year-on-year growth of 6.45%. According to BOABC’s monitoring data, the output in October increased 4.93% year-on-year, and the accumulative output in the first ten months stood at 84.62 million tons, down 0.75% from the same period last year. The estimated annual rice production of enterprises above designated size in 2019 is 104.75 million tons, decreasing by 4.02% from 2012, and it’s slightly higher than the 88.56 million tons in 2011.
According to BOABC’s synthetical calculation, rice output in China was 12.123 million tons in October, including 10.11 million tons from enterprises above designated size and 2.01 million tons from small enterprises. The operation rate of rice processing companies in the country was 39.7% in October, and it’s 37.2% for enterprises above designated size and 26.9% for medium, small and micro businesses.
2) Paddy consumption and inventory
In October, 17.829 million tons of paddy was processed in the country, resulting in 12.123 million tons of rice and 1.7833 million tons of by-products such as rice bran and fine broken rice. Taking the consumption of paddy for feed and industrial use into account, the estimated monthly consumption of paddy in October was 19.692 million tons. In addition, the export volume of paddy (converted from rice) was 368,000 tons, which drove the total consumption of paddy in October to 20.022 million tons. The inventory of paddy in China totaled 141 million tons at the end of October, reaching a monthly safety factor of 7.2(month-end inventory/monthly consumption).  
Newly added supply: The harvest yield in October stood at 59.96 million tons, decreasing by 5.96% (or 3.78 million tons) from the same period last year. The cumulative yield in the crop year totaled 167 million tons, a reduction of 12.05 million tons (or 8.8%) from last year. The imports of rice (converted into paddy) reached 265,000 tons, down 30.8% year-on-year.
3) Market Status
Paddy prices were CNY2474/ton in October and CNY2487/ton in November, which decreased by 1.5% and 1.2% year-on-year respectively. It’s predicted that the prices of middle and late indica rice and japonica rice will rise successively later.
The factory prices of rice were CNY3957/ton in October and CNY3984/ton in November, which fell by 6.41% and 4.90% year-on-year respectively. The gross profits of paddy processing in October and November reached CNY548/ton and CNY533/ton respectively, and the gross profit rates registered at 13.76% in October and 13.41% in November respectively.
Comprehensively considering the processing quantity of rice and electricity price, in October, the sales revenue of rice processing industry stood at CNY48.3billion, and the gross profit was CNY 6.6 billion.
4) Rice supply and consumption and sales rate
In October, China imported 180,000 tons of rice. Taking the inventory at the end of September, import volume and output into account, the supply of rice totaled 13.727 million tons in October. By consumption ways, the consumption in food, industry, feed, and exports stood at 11.188 million tons, 339,000 tons, 618,000 tons, and 339,000 tons respectively, which totaled 12.395 million tons in October. The inventory of rice was 1.332 million tons at the end of October, registering at a sales rate of 102.2%.
Rice consumption in food: the consumption of rice stood at 6.443 million tons for households (2.603 million tons for urban households and 3.839 million tons for rural households), 4.597 million tons in catering and 147,000 tons in food industry respectively.
As for per capita rice consumption, it reached 8.7kg in October. Of that, the per capita consumption for food was 8.0kg, including 4.6 kg for household consumption and 3kg for catering. In household consumption, the per capita consumption in urban households stood at 4.6kg, and it reached 4.6 kg in rural households.
