2 Status Quo of China’s Beef Cattle Industry Development

2.1 Status Quo of China’s Beef Cattle Industry

China’s beef output ranked the third in the world, second to America and Brazil. As most beef products are to meet domestic market demand, China’s beef import and export volume is small. In terms of varieties, there are only a few varieties of special beef cattle and most beef cattle varieties in China are local Chinese cattle. Currently, the beef is mostly room temperature beef, and there is only a little fresh frozen beef, frozen beef and beef products. In terms of slaughter, China’s beef slaughter mainly relies on unauthorized slaughterhouses, and there are only a few large-scale slaughterhouses. In terms of consumption, beef consumption is mostly dining out consumption and family consumption, of which most is consumed by urban residents.

Beef cattle farming industry is concentrated mostly in the agricultural area, which produced over 80% of national beef output. These regions cover mostly places in Henan, Shandong and Hebei. The beef cattle farming in the pastoral area is mostly concentrated in Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang and Gansu.

In order to speed up the development of beef cattle industry by further integrating the resources and strengthen the advantages, currently four beef cattle farming advantageous areas are shaped in China’s beef cattle farming industry: the Central Plain Advantageous Area, the Northeast Advantageous Area, the Northwest Advantageous Area and the Southwest Advantageous Area.
