Latest data from Guangxi Statistics Bureau indicates farmers are still motivated to grow canes in 2012. The cane acreage continued to expand, which affected the grain acreage, the early rice acreage fell by 1.2% and there is pressure on materializing the grain production target in the year.

The benefit from grain growing is much lower than growing cash crops in Guangxi.  The first payment for ordinary canes was 500 yuan/ton in 2011/2012, 3.7% higher year on year, also there has been linkage between cane procurement price and sugar price and second settlement, cane growing could generate high profit.
