What development will smart pig farming achieve in China’s pig industry?

China Agriculture Report By CnAgri2018-08-15 10:39:31China Agriculture Report Print Following the step that Ding Lei of Neteast started to raise pigs in 2009,  Alibaba cooperated with Tequ Group and Dekang Group in the early 2018 to realize AI pig breeding, and recently Beijing agricultural information interconnection technology Co. and Anyou Group formed a smart farming alliance. What development will smart pig farming achieve in China?
From the current so-called smart pig raising model in China, the technical route of intelligent pig raising is summarized as follows: Firstly, the basic data such as the number, body temperature and environmental indicators of pigs are obtained through hardware and pig ID uniqueness scheme; then intelligent connection of regional data is achieved through AI application; finally, the reduction in death rate, the prevention and control on diseases, and improvement in PSY are realized through analysis. In a word, the efficiency of the entire herd will be improved through precise management of each pig.
We believe that smart farming is expected to develop rapidly in large-scale enterprises, and is hard to be promoted in small-scale pig farms. PSY is an important indicator to measure the level of pig raising technology: At present, the PSY of Wenshi and Muyuan reaches 24, which is equivalent to that of European and American countries. This shows that large-scale breeding group is getting close to the physiological limit of pigs, and artificial intelligence technology cannot further raise PSY.
There are still a large number of small-scale farmers in China (the data of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs shows that in 2017, the proportion of small-scale farmers each with an annual output of less than 500 hogs in China was 53.1%). At present, there are multiple feeding methods and breeding models for pigs, which are corresponding to different environmental conditions and economic development levels. In general, domestic pig farming has the characteristics of poor environment and low production efficiency, and it is necessary to make improvement in farming environment, stock breeding, feed nutrition, raising technology, market forecasting, etc. to raise the level of hog farming in China.
In practical applications, the input and maintenance cost of smart devices are high, the overall cost performance needs to be improved, therefore, the power to purchase smart devices is insufficient. However, as a new thing, pig intelligent farming will be widely promoted and used in the future through its promotion in qualified farms, continuously improvement, and reduction in use cost.
