Analysis Of Corn Pests and Disease in China

There had been widespread heavy rainfalls in the north, which was very positive for the production of middle and late corn disease, the major disease include corn leaf blight and brown blotch, while armyworm and cotton borer was the major pests.
Cotton leaf blight spread fast in the Northeast and North China, including 1.2m hectares in Jilin Province. It would be moderate to serious in Inner Mongolia and the northeastern provinces (including Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning), and total occurrence was expected to be 4m hectares. On the other hand, brown blotch would be widespread in North China. In Hebei and Henan province, average ratio of diseased plant was 6.5% and 3.1% respectively, the highest record has hit 48% in Hebei.
2nd generation armyworm was common in the Northeast, North China, Huanghai Area, the Southwest and Northwest, with the total occurrence hit 4.3m hectares, record-high since 2001. Inner Mongolia, Hebei and Shanxi saw an outbreak of 3rd generation larva in early August, featuring massive occurrence and high density and was reckoned as the most serious in latest 10 years. It posed severe threat to grain production security, with the total occurrence expected to be over 6m hectares.
In China, total occurrence area of 1st and 2nd generation corn borer has reached 11m hectares, with the Northeast suffering the most. In Heilongjiang and Liaoning, the highest ratio of diseased plant hit 44% and 14% respectively, while in North China, the Northwest and the Southwest, the figure was 2% to 12% in general.
According to the National Climate Center, there were more rainfalls compared with previous years in most area of the Northeast, middle and eastern region of Inner Mongolia, North China, most Huanghuai Area, eastern region of the Northwest, middle and northern of the Southwest, especially in southeastern region of Jilin, most Liaoning, most Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, northern Shandong, western Sichuan, which saw 20% to 50% more over previous years. And the weather will continue to be positive for the occurrence of corn leaf blight, armyworm and corn borer. So there is high possibility that pests and diseases above would outbreak in spring corn area including the Northeast and northern region of North China, and there is high risk of armyworm outbreak in local areas.
