Food Industry in May

The food industry witnessed a moderate growth of production, sales and investment but a slight profit drop in May. On the whole, the industry’s boom index was 9.71 in May, above the 8.70 for April.
 
The nation’s grain and vegoil retail value was RMB108 billion in May, up 14% on the year-on-year basis. The catering industry’s retail value was RMB202.3 billion, up 9.2% on the year-on-year basis. Adjusting for price, their increase rates were 8.47% and 5.81% respectively.
 
Food retail value accounted for 16.43% of the nation’s commodity retail value in May, up 0.1% on the year-on-year basis. Taking into account of food sales through various channels, the food industry’s sale actually added 3.65% in May on the year-on-year basis.
 
The farm-product-processing industry and the food-making industry attained an added value increase by 8.1% and 11.5% respectively in May on the year-on-year basis. Adjusting for price, their increase rates were 7.67% and 11.06% respectively.
 
The farm-product-processing industry received RMB82.718 billion investment, the food-making industry RMB34.573 billion and the hotel and catering industry RMB55.765 billion in May, up 34.11%, 11.35% and 26.58% respectively on the year-on-year basis. Adjusting for inflation, their increase rates were 26.82%, 14.25% and 29.5% respectively. The increase was accredited to food price growth.
 
Grain-processing generated a gross profit rate of 10.05% in May, slightly more than the month before. Specifically, the production of flour, japonica, indica, starch and ethanol generated a profit of 8.57%, 14.83%, 11.63%, 5.27% and –3.02% respectively.
 
Flour and rice transportation generated a profit of 14.39% and 14.16% respectively in May, less than the month before. The transportation of flour and japonica in small packages generated a profit of 23.65% and 22.02% respectively.
