China Flour Production & Consumption in Dec. 2013

Flour supply: According to the National Bureau of Statistics, flour production by medium and large mills registered 12.654 million MT in Dec. Deducting repetitive statistics, BOABC estimates that flour production was about 7.47 million MT, a drop of 5.09% on the year-on-year basis. Flour production totaled 78.159 million MT in Jan. ~ Dec., a growth of 0.51% on the year-on-year basis. Taking into account of month-end stocks and imports, flour supply was 8.00 million MT in Dec., down 7.32% on the year-on-year basis, influenced by meat consumption increase. Meanwhile, fast growth of wheat price promoted flour price to increase, which restrained flour consumption as well.
Flour consumption was 7.462 million MT in Dec., including 6.896 million MT for food use, 506,000 MT for feed production and 38,000 MT for industrial uses. Of the flour consumed for food use, 3.241 million MT were consumed by urban households, 1.971million MT by the catering industry and 1.684 million MT by the food industry.
Flour consumption by rural households, restaurants, the food industry and urban households accounted for 33.04%, 28.42%, 22.57% and 10.39% of the total food-use consumption respectively.
Flour wholesale price: flour wholesale and retail price saw different levels of increase this month. It was driven by demand and price increase by state-owned enterprises. It was RMB3,236/MT in Dec. and average price was RMB3,120/MT in Jan. ~ Dec., up 11.78% and 9.95% respectively on the year-on-year basis. Prices for special first grade flour and special second grade flour were RMB3,275/MT and RMB3,080/MT respectively in Dec., up 6.81% and 13.08% YOY respectively. And accumulative average prices were RMB3,192/MT and RMB2974/MT respectively in Jan. ~Dec., up 6.24% and 11.36% respectively on the year-on-year basis.
In view of terminal consumption, prices for special first grade flour, special second grade flour and small packaged flour were RMB5.40/kg and RMB4.48/kg and RMB5.60/kg respectively in Dec., up 3.72%, 7.78% and 5.81% YOY respectively. And accumulative average prices were RMB5.25/kg, RMB4.41/kg and RMB5.50/kg respectively in Jan. ~ Dec.., up 2.40%, 8.77% and 5.86% respectively on the year-on-year basis.
