Specialty Paper Industry Will Maintain Fast Growth in the Next 5 Years in China

In recent years, papermaking industry remained sluggish as a whole in China but the output of specialty paper and paperboard is rising year by year. Specialty paper and paperboard production has been growing rapidly in China with a very broad industry development prospect.

According to the statistics of CTAPI, the output of specialty paper and paperboard recorded 5.9 million tons in 2015, up 9.26% year on year; the average annual growth rate was 10.26% from 2006 to 2015.

The proportion of specialty paper output was on an upward trend in China and it was 5.5% in 2015, up 0.5% year on year. In 2015, the specialty paper output accounted for 22% of global specialty paper output (26.9 million tons) which was 4% lower than the 26% (China’s total paper output). China’s specialty paper exports exceed imports and the exports reached 970,000 tons in 2014, accounting for 18% of the output; the imports recorded 330,000 tons; the net exports was 640,000 tons.

According to incomplete statistics, specialty paper capacity in 2014 was 14.13% higher than that in 2015, the operation rate was around 80%. In recent years, the new investment of specialty paper was around RMB 5 billion, the new capacity was around one million tons.

In the next five years, as a major producer and seller of specialty paper in Asia, China will witness a rapid growth and bright development prospect of specialty paper.
