Hog slaughter increased in the first half of 2018, while hog inventory declined to varying degrees.

China Agriculture Report By CnAgri2018-08-01 14:44:55China Agriculture Report Print According to hog production data published by various provinces in the first half of 2018, Henan in the central and western region, Hunan, and Sichuan ranked top three; Guangxi, Hebei, Qinghai and other provinces saw faster increase in hog slaughter; the production of Zhejiang and Jiangsu dropped sharply.
Specifically:
(1) National pig production increased year-on-year. According to the data from the National Bureau of Statistics, in the first half of 2018, hog slaughter in the country was 334.22 million heads, up 1.2% year-on-year; pork output was 26.14 million tons, up 1.4% year-on-year; pig inventory came to 40.94 million heads, down 1.8% year-on-year.
 
(2) Henan, Hunan and Sichuan are still the top three provinces in China in terms of hog slaughter, and the production in the Yangtze River Delta region has experienced a significant decline. In the first half of 2018, hog slaughter in Henan, Hunan, and Sichuan was 30.53 million heads, 29.84 million heads, and 28.72 million heads, respectively, increasing by 3%, 3.5%, and 1.9% from the previous year. The production of hogs in Jiangsu and Zhejiang was 13.38 million heads and 4.67 million heads respectively, decreasing by 4% and 10.6% year-on-year separately.
 
(3) The inventory of pigs has decreased to varying degrees. In the first half of 2018, the inventory of pigs in Henan, Hunan, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang respectively was 41.90 million heads, 36.68 million heads, 14.43 million heads, and 5.3 million heads,   down by 2%, 0.6%, 4.5%, and 7.1% separately. The decline in pig prices and farming efficiency and even the loss are the main reasons for the reduction in the stock of pigs.
