FTA Encouraged More Fruits Imports from U.S.A to Korea

    Since FTA become effective on March 15th 2012, by the end of 2012, Korea increased significant import volume of orange, cherry and grapes from the U.S. The import value of orange amounted to $148 million, up by 33.4% from last year. The import value of cherry amounted to $80 million, up by 78% from last year. The import value of grape amounted to $26 million, up by 21.6% from last year. Fruits from the  States directly affected Korea domestic fruits consumption, and imposed great impact on Korean fruits farmers. According to Korea Agricultural and Aquatic Food Logistics Association, the Korean prices dropped by 43% from last year. According to Korean Rural Economy Research Institute researchers, the State needs to design ways to compensate fruit farmers.
