According to the customs, China imported 346,000 MT cotton in May, 19.7% less than the month before and 31.05% less than the same period of last year. Cotton imports went down for four months on end, compared with the same period of last year.

Cotton imports totaled 2.142 million MT in January ~ May and 3.818 million MT between August of 2012 and May of 2013, down 16.95% and 14.38% respectively on the year-on-year basis, attributable to a large stock and last year’s bumper harvest at home.

Cotton import price was $2,056/MT (CIF) in May, far below the domestic market price, a stimulus to imports. BOABC predicts 4.316 million MT cotton imports in this crop year.
