Estimates of Grain Consumption in 2013
By CnAgri2013-07-16 11:01:34 Print Grain consumption for food use was estimated to be 23.143 million MT in May and 111.9 million MT in January ~ May, 4.37% and 6.69% more than the same period of last year respectively, attributable to inflation and the decline of livestock product consumption caused by bird flu after Spring Festival. Of the total, 8.586 million MT were consumed by rural households, 4.203 million MT by urban households and 10.354 million MT by the catering industry.Grain consumption by feed mills was estimated to be 14.402 million MT in May and 67.394 million MT in January ~ May, 2.71% and 6.11% more than the same period of last year respectively. Feed consumption was estimated to be 92.635 million MT in January ~ May, an increase of 5.19% on the year-on-year basis.
Grain consumption for alcohol production was 3.741 million MT in May and 18.646 million MT in January ~ May, 2.57% and 6.56% more than the same period of last year respectively.
Grain consumption for industrial uses was 6.853 million MT in May (an increase of 3.49% on the year-on-year basis) and 35.578 million MT in January ~ May.
Corn price was RMB2,364/MT in May, down 1.3% from the month before and down 2.5% on the year-on-year basis. Starch and ethanol production generated a profit of RMB155/MT and a loss of RMB178/MT respectively in May, suggesting a profit ratio of 5.29% and –3.01% respectively.
Grain consumption for various uses totaled 46.898 million MT in May, leaving an inventory of 282 million MT at the end of May, suggesting a monthly consumption index of 6.01, higher than the 5.73 recorded in the same period of last year. grain stock is on the whole abundant.
Grain inventory in May consisted of 102 million MT paddy, 97.4 million MT corn, 43.237 million MT wheat, 1.652 million MT barley and 36.967 million MT others.
In terms of the stock of wheat, corn and paddy, 127 million MT were state reserve, 48.49 million MT on-farm stock and 67.5 million MT other stock in May.
Planted grain acreage, grain production and imports are predicted to be 111 million hectares, 596 million MT and 16 million MT respectively in 2013. As supply outruns demand, year-end grain inventory and safety index are predicted to go up to 260 million MT and 42.62% respectively.
