The Development of Organic Fertilizer Industry is Restricted by Many Factors

The publication of favorable policies for organic fertilizer industry greatly boosts the development of organic fertilizer industry, but BOABC’s analysts think, the development of organic fertilizer industry also is restricted by many factors:

(1) It starts late, the capacity is decentralized and the technology is backward: owing to a late start and decentralized source of materials, the scale of producers is small and the capacity is relatively decentralized (the companies with annual organic fertilizer output of below 20,000 MT take up more 80%), besides, the quality of products, technical R & D and brand promotion all lag behind many other countries.

(2) The policies are mainly favorable for some areas. The main goals of Action Plan of Developing Fruit-Vegetable-Tea Organic Fertilizer Instead of Fertilizer are to improve non-point source pollution from agriculture, promote the returning of livestock manure and straws to field and focus on competitive production areas of fruit, vegetable and tea, instead of large-area promotion nationwide.

(3) Supporting equipment falls behind, restricting promotion. Compared to fertilizer, the use of organic fertilizer is very great, but supporting agricultural machineries fall behind, which restricts the use of organic fertilizer on field crops on a large scale, only for high value-added crops such as fruit tree and greenhouse vegetables.

(4) High costs push up organic fertilizer prices. Owing to relatively high costs such as labor and transportation, organic fertilizer prices are obviously higher than farmyard manure. Large-scale promotion of commercial organic fertilizer is restricted by purchasing power of grass-root farmers.

(5) Owing to a low threshold of entry, the quality of organic fertilizer products can’t be ensured. The existing standards for organic fertilizer industry include Organic Fertilizer, Organic-Inorganic Compound Fertilizer and Bio-organic Fertilizer, but the thresholds of these standards are relatively low. Besides, livestock/poultry manure is the main material, and antibiotic residues and excessive amounts of sodion and heavy metal would bring pollution to soil.
