According to the classification of grain crops in 2018, the sown area, the output, and the yield of cereals were 91.915 million hectares, 552.92 million tons, and 6015 kg/ha respectively, and they decreased by 0.53%, 0.03%, and 0.50% separately. The sown area, output and yield of beans were 110.32 million hectares, 20.629 million tons, and 1870 kg/ha respectively, up by 6.84%, 6.84% and 1.25% respectively. The sown area, output and yield of potato were 9.17 million hectares, 34.992 million tons and 3816 kg/ha respectively, increasing 0.61%, 1.56% and 0.95% respectively over the previous year.
According to local production development trends, by 2020, domestic planting area of bean will peak at 11.714 million hectares, with an output of 22,371,000 tons and a yield of 1,910 kg/ha. By 2030, the sown area, the output, and the yield will 10.985 million hectares, 21.576 million tons and 1985 kg/ha respectively.
In terms of potato production, by 2020, the planting area, the output, and the yield of potato in domestic will reach 9.398 million hectares, 3646.3 tons, and 3880kg/ha. By 2030, the sown area, the output, and the yield will be 9.982 million hectares, 41.98 million tons and 4206 kg/ha. respectively. The level of yield per unit determines that its competitive advantage is much higher than that of the bean market.
The dominance of cereals production is further enhanced. By 2020, the sown area, the output and the yield of cereals in domestic will reach 92.305 million hectares, 562.7 million tons, and 6096kg/ha. By 2030, the area, the output, and the yield will be 92.042 million hectares, 674 million tons, 7317 kg/ha. The yield level of cereal crops determines that their competitive advantage is far higher than that of beans and potatoes.
However, it is worth noting that the gap between China's per unit area yield of cereals and international advanced level is still widening, affecting China’s economic global competitiveness. It’s the key to resoling the agricultural problem to change the economic structure and social structure of rural areas in China, grant peasants constitutional equal citizenship, eliminate the restriction of current household registration system on the flow of resources and labor, and remove the social security system that restricts the development of of agriculture. These issues are also the key for resolving the problems of China’s economic and social development. The essence of China’s problems is the issues of agriculture and peasants, which will exists and should be solved in the next 30 years.
