Urban Per Capita Food Expense in 3rd Quarter of 2012

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, urban residents’ per capita expense was RMB4,183 in the third quarter of 2012, up 8% over the previous quarter and up 7.9% on the year-on-year basis. Adjusting for inflation, the expense went up 5.9% on the year-on-year basis, below the GDP growth rate of 7.4%.
 
Urban per capita food expense was RMB1,446, up 3.18% over the previous quarter and up 5.77% on the year-on-year basis. The food expense accounted for 34.58% of residents’ total expense. Urban Engel coefficient was 21.77%, the bottom in three years.
 
Urban per capita food expense increased 28.34% in Hainan, 15.28% in Chongqing and 11.46% in Xinjiang on the year-on-year basis, topping other provinces.
 
The share of food expense in urban residents’ total expense expanded 7.97% in Shanghai, 5.75% in Zhejiang, 5.48% in Chongqing and 4.09% in Hainan on the year-on-year basis, topping other provinces.
