China’s Fish Production & Exports in 2012

The nation’s aquaculture acreage was 8.088 million hectares in 2012, including 2.18 million hectares of seawater aquaculture acreage and 5.9 million hectares of fresh water aquaculture acreage, 3.23%, 3.54% and 3.12% larger than the previous year respectively.
 
The nation’s aquatic production was 59.076 million MT, including 42.883 million MT artificial aquaculture production and 16.193 million MT catch, 5.43%, 6.59% and 2.49% more than the previous year respectively. Of the catch, 1.223 million MT were pelagic catch, an increase of 6.59% on the year-on-year basis.
 
China’s aquatic product exports registered 3.8 million MT in 2012, valuing $18.983 billion, down 2.84% but up 6.69% respectively on the year-on-year basis. The export value accounted for 30% of the nation’s agricultural export value, up 0.7% on the year-on-year basis. For thirteen years on end, aquatic product exports topped farm product exports of any kind.
 
Though aquatic product foreign trade generated a favorable surplus of $10.985 billion in 2012, exports to EU and South Korea decreased from the previous year.
