Hindustan Times stated the cane acreage shall shrink from 5.2 to 4.85 million hectares in 2013 owing to the serious drought in the farming regions, and the final figure shall depend on the weather in the coming four months. Similarly, the cane production in 13/14 shall drop to 300 million tons and more canes shall be used for sugar producing based on local traditional techniques. Sugar production in 13/14 shall fall from the present 24 to 23 million tons. Therefore India could become a net sugar importer in the next campaign.

The Indian Government stated on 20th June it would impose 0.01% tax on non-agricultural bulk derivative commodities from 1st July. The Government exempted tax on produce such as wheat, cotton and chili, but raised tax on processed products such as white sugar and guar gum.
