Beijing Includes Infant Food in Risk Monitoring

Recently, Beijing Municipal Health Bureau issued "2013 Beijing Municipal Food Safety Risk Monitoring Plan" which clearly states that, in the future, monitoring of pollutant and harmful factors in food shall adopt combination means of routine monitoring and special monitoring. Routine monitoring is for the food with large consumption amount and wide circulation scope; and special monitoring is for the food involved in major food safety incidents happened recently in our country.

The published food chemical pollutants and harmful factors for monitoring include a total of 144 items, routine monitoring includes pesticides, veterinary drugs, harmful elements, mycotoxins, additives in food, and harmful substances generated during food processing; Special monitoring includes food additives, pesticide residues, illegally-added non-food substances and forbidden drugs and other drugs. Food microbiological monitoring includes indicators of food-borne pathogenic bacteria, viruses and parasites, etc.

In the future, the special monitoring implemented in the whole city will include monitoring microbial indicators and staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin to infant formula food production and processing process, as well as urban mobile breakfast booths. The monitored foods include those in supermarkets, grocery stores, agricultural trade markets, stores around schools, online stores and catering service enterprises, mainly local products. According to the request of the plan, the set monitoring stations will basically cover the whole city.
