China’s planted cotton acreage and cotton production are estimated to be 4.901 million hectares and 7.337 million MT in 2013/2014, down 5.45% and 6.97% respectively on the year-on-year basis.
 
Cotton acreage is estimated to shrink 8 ~ 13% in eastern provinces this year. Xinjiang and Gansu may jointly account for 45.3% of the nation’s total cotton acreage.
 
Cotton production is estimated to be 4.271 million MT in Xinjiang, 701,000 MT in Shandong, 572,000 MT in Hubei and 521,000 MT in Hebei, down 5.18%, 10%, 17.28% and 8.68% respectively from last year.
 
224,200 MT cotton underwent notarized quality verification in Sept., a collapse of 34% on the year-on-year basis. By Oct. 20, cotton mills had 1.303 million MT cotton go through notarized quality verification, 78.45% in Xinjiang.
 
The state cotton reserve companies’ procurement totaled 401,800 MT by Oct. 18, a sharp decrease of 62.78% on the year-on-year basis, attributable to low procurement price. Of the total, 74.3% were procured in Xinjiang. Cotton procurement recorded 21,800 MT in Hebei, 19,900 MT in Hubei and 15,100 MT in Shandong in the meantime, topping other provinces except Xinjiang.
 
Considering low returns from cotton production, the nation’s cotton acreage is predicted to keep shrinking and cotton production may drop to 6.918 million MT next year.
