Urban Food Consumption in 2012

China Agriculture Report By CnAgri2013-04-23 14:12:49China Agriculture Report Print According to the National Bureau of Statistics, urban per capita food consumption value was RMB1,522 in the fourth quarter of last year, up 5.2% over the previous quarter and up 8.2% on the year-on-year basis. Food consumption value accounted for 35.41% of urban consumers’ total consumption value in the fourth quarter, down 1.27% on the year-on-year basis, suggesting a drop of Engel coefficient.
 
Urban food consumption value totaled RMB1.05 trillion in the fourth quarter, up 5.2% over the previous quarter and up 12.3% on the year-on-year basis. Urban food consumption value totaled RMB4.17 trillion in 2012.
 
Shanghai, Guangdong, Tianjin and Beijing ranked top four in terms of urban per capita food consumption value, whose value recorded RMB2,457, RMB2,043, RMB1,877 and RMB1,867 respectively, up 3.35%, 9.41%, 8.78% and 7.03% respectively on the year-on-year basis. Urban per capita food consumption value recorded RMB8,906, RMB8,258, RMB7,344 and RMB7,535 in these cities respectively in 2012, up 8.42%, 10.53%, 10.21% and 9.12% respectively on the year-on-year basis.
 
Qinghai, Hainan and Chongqing ranked top three in terms of the growth urban per capita food consumption value in the fourth quarter, whose growth rates were 16.54%, 13.92% and 13.24% respectively. Chongqing, Hainan and Xinjiang ranked top three in terms of the growth of urban per capita food consumption value in 2012, whose growth rates were 197.48%、15.55% and 145.46% respectively.
 
Thanks to increased income and slow growth of food price, urban consumers’ food expenses shrank in total consumption value in the fourth quarter. But the share of food consumption value went up 7.97% in Shanghai, 5.75% in Zhejiang, 5.75% in Hainan and 4.09% in Chongqing in the fourth quarter, topping other regions. The share of food consumption value expanded 4.35% in Gansu, 3.05% in Jilin and 2.87% in Qinghai in 2012 on the year-on-year basis, topping other regions.
