Compared with imported soybeans, the biggest advantages of domestic soybeans are they are of non-GM soybeans and of high protein content. The domestic edible soybean product enterprises and soybean protein powder processing enterprises have great demands for domestic high-protein soybeans. However, due to problems in breeding and cultivation management, the protein content of domestic commodity soybeans could hardly be over 40%. To increase the domestic soybean protein content is the domestic soybean breeders and planters’ common goal.

In 2017, the overall soybean quality of Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia and Jilin was fairly good. The full-grain rate, the proportion of the soybeans above average, the average value of the crude protein (dry basis) and the proportion of the standard high-protein soybeans (meeting the third-grade standards) were the highest of this year; the crude protein (dry basis) and the protein of the standard high-oil content soybeans (meeting the third-grade standards) dropped slightly compared with last year.

The average value of the full grain rate reached 91.1%, which was the highest found in recent years; the average value of the damaged-grain rate was 6%, better than last year; the proportion of the soybeans meeting the grade standards was 80.9%, up sharply by 20.4% from last year; the average value of the crude fat content was 20.1%; the proportion of the standard high-oil content soybeans was 50.6%, down sharply by 27% from last year; the average value of the crude protein content was 40.1%, up 1.6% from last year; the proportion of the standard high-protein soybeans was 58%, up sharply by 39.6% from last year.

As the main consumption channels of the domestic soybeans are for food and food processing, and oil-purpose soybeans are at competitive disadvantage compared with imported soybeans; in addition, the prices of edible soybeans are much higher than oil mills’ purchase prices. The price difference can often reach 1,000 RMB/MT. Therefore, farmers mostly tend to plant the soybean varieties with high-protein content.
