Cheese Retail Enjoys Big Potential in China

The growth of the sales value of cheese has been around 10% in both 2016 and 2017, faster than the growth of the dairy market on the whole. Cheese retail in China in 2017 should be close to 30,000 tons, and sales value up to 4 billion yuan.
From the perspective of market of different levels, cheese retail in cities directly under the Central Government and provincial capitals accounts for the largest share, nearly 60% in the total of cheese retail; cities at the prefecture level 25%; cities at the county level and townships 15%. From 2015 to 2017, the annual compound growth of cheese retail of cities directly under the Central Government and provincial capitals was about 5%, cities of the prefecture level 10% and cities of county level and townships 15%.
From the perspective of varieties, the sales value of children cheese accounts for the largest proportion, over half in the total cheese retail; shredded cheese grew the fastest, the growth of sales value of shredded cheese was over 50% in both 2016 and 2017.
Chinese parents accord importance to the quality and nutrition of children’s food, and hence cheese producers target families with kids and introduced children’s cheese with emphasis on taste, nutrition supplement and meanwhile packaging is attractive to kids. Sound effects have been achieved.
As the most common ingredient for pizza and Italian noodle, shredded cheese is popular among young consumers who are keen on Western diet, and the sales value of shredded cheese has grown rapidly.
In general, cheese consumption is still at the infant stage in China. Processing companies foster consumers’ cheese consumption habit by introducing snack cheese and cross-boundary cheese varieties.
