On February 22, 2018, the farm gate price of eggs in main producing areas was 6.90 yuan/kg, down 19.47% from that before the Spring Festival. The average wholesale price of fresh eggs in 36 medium and large cities nationwide was 8.95 yuan/kg, down 4.58% from that before the Spring Festival.
During the period from 2012 to 2018, egg prices after the Spring Festival dropped by 1.4-3.2 yuan/kg before the Spring Festival, with an average decrease of 2.32 yuan/kg. Egg prices after the Spring Festival in 2018 declined by 1.58yuan/kg from that before the Spring Festival, the decrease was 1.38 yuan/kg and lower than that in 2017. Egg traders intensively stocked eggs before the Spring Festival and the growth in egg prices was lower than the market expectation, so the change in price was not great; at the same time, due to the decrease in the numbers of laying hens, overall supply of eggs was tight relatively, and the price of eggs dropped slightly after the Spring Festival.
Although the demand for eggs is mediocre, egg prices will rebound slightly after the Lantern Festival as schools and labor-intensive enterprises gradually resume normal demand.
