According to Reuters Ottawa February 27th news, China had imposed temporary control on Canadian beef and beef products import after a case of mad cow disease was found in Canada. According to world beef production trend (Fig 1), in 2014 global beef output was 57 MT, among that Canadian beef was 1.05 MT accounting for 1.8% of the total output. In 2014 global beef trade, Brazil, India and Australia respectively exported 2 MT, 1.87 MT and 1.50 MT, and Canada exported 320,000 tons accounting for 3.5% of the total. BOABC thinks that under this current trade trend “Canada mad cow disease” will have seldom influence on international beef price.

According to BOABC’s arrangement on customs data, China mainly imported beef from Australia, New Zealand, Uruguay, Canada and Argentina, and they respectively accounted for 52.6%, 23.9%, 12.0%, 8.3% and 3.1% of the total beef import volume. In 2013, China totally imported beef 297,000 tons. Based on BOABC in 2014 Hongkong and Vietnam respectively imported beef 402,400 tons and 1.10 MT. While the total amount of smuggling of this two places was about 1.10 MT. Thus China beef import volume from Canada down by 1.7%. Taken together, BOABC thinks that the case that China had imposed temporary control on Canadian beef and beef products import will cause domestic beef price rising.
