Chinese chicken import and export trade characteristics

China has relatively weak competitiveness in chicken export, and is a net importer of chicken meat. In 2017, China exported 436,373 tons of chicken meat while importing 450,660 tons chicken meat, and the import volume was greater than the export volume.
 
Judging from the forms of exported chicken products, China exported more cooked chicken than frozen, fresh and chilled chicken, and these two products respectively accounted for 55.42% and 44.58% of the total export volume of chicken. Exported cooked chicken products mainly include chicken breast, chicken legs, other chicken meat and entrails; exported frozen, fresh and chilled products mainly were fresh or chilled whole chicken and other frozen chicken pieces.  
Judging from the forms of imported chicken products, the import volume of fresh, frozen, and chilled chicken accounted for more than 99% of total imports, and the proportion of cooked chicken was less than 1%. Imported frozen, fresh and chilled chicken mainly consisted of frozen chicken wings, frozen chicken claws and boned frozen chicken pieces, which accounted for 43.38%, 31.05% and 16.33% of the total import volume respectively.



From the perspective of export destinations, most of chicken in China is exported to countries and regions in Asia. Among them, fresh, frozen and chilled chicken is mainly exported to Hong Kong, and cooked chicken is mainly exported to Japan.
 
In terms of source countries of the imported chicken, China’s imported chicken meat mainly comes from Brazil. In 2017, China imported 382,052 tons of chicken from Brazil, accounting for 84.80% of the total import volume; the second largest source country was Argentina who exported 52,930 tons of chicken to China in 2017, accounting for 11.75% of total imports.
