Organic Fertilizer Substitution for Fertilizer Leads to An Increase in Planting Costs of Fruits, Vegetables and Tea Plan

China Agriculture Report By CnAgri2017-11-02 10:39:31China Agriculture Report Print The action of organic fertilizer substitution for fertilizer for fruits, vegetables and tea plants becomes an important way to cut down the use of fertilizer and would be promoted in the core producing areas of fruits, vegetables and tea plants, as well as in production bases of famous brands. The use of fertilizer for fruits, vegetables and tea plants would have decreased by more 50% by 2020.

Currently, the use of fertilizer for fruits and vegetables has generally been higher than that of western developed countries, of which the use of fertilizer for fruits and vegetables is more 2 times as much as Japan, 6 times as much as America, and 7 much as many as the EU. The use of fertilizer for garden crops such as fruits, vegetables and tea plants accounts for 40% of the total.

Because of relatively long compost time with huge labor inputs such as turning-over, drying, smash and package, organic fertilizer production costs increase; besides, organic fertilizer can’t enjoy the preferential policies for fertilizer transportation at this stage and the use of organic fertilizer is huge, so organic fertilizer transportation costs are 2-3 times as many as chemical fertilizer. Due to high labor costs and transportation costs for organic fertilizer (livestock manure) production, orchard’s planting costs increase.

Although organic fertilizer can improve the appearance and internal quality of fruits and vegetables, yet the consumers have no confidence in quality of domestic fruits. An increase in selling prices resulting from an increase in costs won’t be accepted by the consumers in the short term, so the promotion of organic fertilizer substitution for fertilizer would face many problems and difficulties.
